Why Reflector Decisions Matter So Much
May 29, 2023
In Human Design we're told that a Reflector's strategy is to wait a lunar cycle, about 28 days, to make decisions. Sometimes that feels totally impossible to execute and is more just a quirk meant to showcase how unique Reflectors are. After all, if our strategy wasn't so outrageous would we really be that special?
Ra Uru Hu, the creator of Human Design had Gate 51 in is chart. This is known as the Gate of Shock and since Ra was also a Manifestor, his strategy was to inform. These two qualities together formed someone who was put here to tell us some pretty shocking stuff, without any care about HOW the message gets put into practice.
Kinda seems like Reflectors got the short end of the stick, doesn't it.
But that's ok! It doesn't matter why we Reflectors are the way we are, what matters more is that we own our differences and find ways to show up in alignment as often as we can.
If you've ever struggled to honour your strategy of waiting a lunar cycle, here are some reasons why it's not only important to do so but also part of the gifts you're here to share with the world.
#1 Seeing & Reflecting Others
Yes, one of the Reflector's biggest roles is to reflect the people we're around back to them. That way they can feel like they're looking in a mirror and ultimately course-correct to get back into or stay in alignment. But our decision making actually plays a huge role in helping us fulfil this function.
Every time a decision point comes to you it's a chance to help you get around those who need you most. If you've ever bumped into someone you haven't seen in ages at a coffee shop or grocery store, that's the kind of serendipity I'm talking about. YOU made a decision that put you on the path to bump into that person!
Even if that conversation was awkward or seemingly unproductive, I can assure you that the other person walked away with some thoughts or questions they needed to ask themselves, and you were the one to put that in motion.
Since Reflectors are the shape-shifters of Human Design, we take on interests quickly and tend to drop them just as fast for this exact reason. The things that catch our attention are really the Universe giving us a chance to decide to be who we're designed to be.
Not to be self-important here but when you make decisions based on fear of what others might think, you're robbing others of the opportunity to have a Reflector encounter and benefit from being reflected. Think about it.
You're part of a group that makes up only 1% of the population. Some people have never even met a Reflector in real life, so how would they ever get to see themselves through your mirror?
Moving through each day without paying much attention to how you make even simple decisions can gradually drag you farther away from the interactions you were meant to have. Why not add some intention and focus on what you say yes or no to, and see where it leads?
Which brings me to…
#2 Fulfilling Your Own Goals
Sometimes I get pretty fired up when other Human Design types describe us Reflectors as not having any real personality or true sense of self. It's 100% not true!
You are someone with goals, dreams, and desires. And these are real.
If you're a person who exists right now, you have one or many purposes you're here to fulfil in your life. And as a Reflector, your mission is extra important because of the unique gifts and abilities you've got.
Decision making, or rather making decisions using your strategy, is the easiest way to get on track and fulfil those goals. Things get tricky when we experience pressure from others to get on their timelines or if their goals are expressed more forcefully than ours. The reality is that the other types usually have more clarity and defined ways they express their priorities. We're much more subtle.
So what does decision making have to do with your goals? Two things: setting boundaries and sticking to them.
Both of which rely on your ability to make decisions that guide you towards your dreams so you don't drift into someone else's by accident.
How many decisions did you make today? You decided what time to wake up, what food to eat, how much exercise to do, what content to consume, where to put your focus, who you spent time with…and on and on it goes.
Can you start to see how these small decisions over time will actually compound into big results? The only question is if the results are the ones you're striving for.
Once you're clear on your goals it's time to put some boundaries in place so they don't get steamrolled by the bigger energy influences in your life.
A boundary isn't a restriction or something negative. It's a small way to stand up for something that's important to you, and I'm guessing you already have boundaries to help the other people in your life. Maybe your family always has Sunday dinner together. That's a boundary. Or getting your kids to finish homework before they're allowed screen time. That's a boundary. So why not set things up to help you succeed in achieving your own mission and goals?
Using your strategy to make aligned decisions takes a bit of planning and preparing, especially if you've got a big decision point coming up. It's not like you need to block off 28 days in your calendar and can't speak to a single person during that time. It's actually the opposite!
Setting and enforcing your boundaries so you can work towards your goals might look more like scheduling time to spend with your friends and family so you can try on whatever it is you've got in mind. The key here is making sure you get what you need and have the space to slowly contemplate.
Your goals are too important to push them aside just because it might be uncomfortable to try things differently or take a stand for what you need to get there.
#3 Showing the World A Different Way Forward
I don't have to tell you how quickly the world moves these days. Breaking news from this morning is all but forgotten by lunch, and it doesn't look like things are slowing down any time soon.
That's where you come in.
Any time you get to shine as your true self you're helping others to slow down and become aware to the present moment. Our strategy of waiting a lunar cycle doesn't just drag out a Reflector's decision timeline. It has the ripple effect of bringing space into all the other decisions around you as well.
I was offered a job last year that would've meant moving to a new town and completely changing my life. I helped guide the process so it took place over four months instead of the quick turnaround they were looking for. And during that time, my Husband and I both got to look more closely at all the areas of our life that would be impacted by this new job, and we felt what it would be like. So many domino decisions needed to be considered and had I been forced to give my answer quickly, I would've missed dozens of things that ultimately led me to say no to the job.
In Human Design, Ra Uru Hu spoke about a new paradigm beginning in 2027. One where we become less focused on the tangible 3D aspects of our lives and instead strive for more alignment among all Human Design types. This cannot happen without Reflectors.
We are the barometers of change.
It's our job to help others navigate through this uncharted transition into the new paradigm using the gifts and abilities we've been given, including our unique strategy of waiting a lunar cycle.
As much as waiting for 28 days is talked about for Reflectors, there are lots of decisions that don't actually need that amount of time. But that's a discussion for another day!
I hope you've started (or are continuing) to see how important each and every one of your decisions are to the quality of your life and the lives of those around you.
Unique and Powerful. That's who you are.
