Goal Setting For Reflectors

basics human design inconsistency reflector type Dec 10, 2023

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a huge nerd when it comes to setting goals and having something to strive for. There's something so enticing about a fresh set of goals and the possibilities that go along with it. Like most, I used to wait until the new year to figure out what I wanted my big achievements to be for the year but since discovering Human Design and knowing I'm a Reflector, that's all gone out the window.

Not only do most New Year's resolutions not stick, but for Reflectors we've got some special gifts that come in handy for setting and achieving goals that can be called upon any time of the year. So why wait for the calendar to change?

In running my programs for Reflectors and other Human Design types, it's become so much clearer how useful your design can be to supporting the dreams you desire. Below you'll find a number of ways you're actually designed to set and achieve these magical transformations, and my hope is you'll take the opportunity to dig in and set goals whenever you're reading this, not just when the ball drops at midnight on December 31st.

What's Important to You?

It is so tempting to jot down the same list of generic goals every year or mimic what your best friend is going for, just to have a list. But here's where I want you to back up for a minute. Before you can even begin choosing your goals, you first need to know what's important to you.

My dear Reflectors, since our centres are undefined and we experience our lives so differently from day to day, identifying what's important to you gives you a foundation to start getting clearer on what you really desire in your life. Having important areas is broad enough that you can pretty easily say "Yes, my health is super important" without needing to dial it in just yet. If you're already kicking ass with your overall health, you can probably stop here and not waste your time with new goals in that area.

There was a time when I'd keep putting down the same physical health related goals as other people in my life, even though working out regularly was already engrained in my life. It felt so unsatisfying because I never had anything big or exciting to check off my list. Instead of getting caught in the trap of adopting other people's priorities, keep your focus on what's important to you at this time.

Check Out Your Chart

Did you know that your chart can tell you what kind of goals to set for yourself? It's true, and so fun to play with! Take a look at the arrows in your chart, usually located around the head portion of the body graph. The bottom right arrow is known as "Perspective" and depending on which way that arrow points you're either meant to set specific goals and manifestations or non-specific ones.

Left-facing means specific manifestation: You were designed to be very detailed about the things you desire in your life. When you imagine the house of your dreams or your ideal mate, there are probably specific qualities that you've got in mind. You'll benefit from getting as detailed as possible when setting your goals. Keep in mind that if you don't feel called to pinpoint certain qualities, that's ok! It's not a rule, it's more of a supporting practice. Ultimately, when you envision your desired life, all that matters is that you feel aligned and happy.

Right-facing means non-specific manifestation: For you it may feel heavy or just plain annoying to get specific about what you want. Have you ever been instructed to close your eyes and visualize your dream life? Don't be surprised if exercises like that fall flat. You may have certain "must-haves" when you consider your desires but don't ever feel obligated to visualize the colour of brick on your ideal forever home. A better option is to let your imagination run wild and take in the general setting of what makes you feel great. Maybe it's knowing your family lives close by and you can walk to work. But there's no need to lock down the exact logistics. Feel into your body and follow those sensations. They'll never steer you in the wrong direction!

Goals Are Temporary

I'm not crazy about the word "goal" because it implies you need to strive or reach for something but one of the great things about goals is that they really get you to identify what you want. And more than that, goals are things that can be achieved and crossed off a list, which is music to a Reflector's ears.

Since we're ever-changing, it's nice to know that your goals don't have to be in place for long periods of time for them to be effective at helping you make forward progress in your life.

Anything that brings focus to where you desire to go in life is going to be useful in keeping your attention. Eyes on the prize, and whatnot. So rather than only making massive, life-altering goals, it might be more useful to throw in some smaller (yet still impactful) ones that won't take up your entire year.

Celebrate Where You've Been

Personally, I set and update my goals twice a year and neither dates fall on the new year. You can use your birthday as your own "new year" and take that opportunity to reflect back on what you've accomplished and where you'd like to step things up. Most of us are so conditioned to see what needs improving that we miss out on how far we've come. Give yourself the gift of reflecting on every point of growth in the last 6 months or year. Not only does this show yourself some love and acknowledgement for what you've been through, it also proves that small changes can amount to big wins over time.

During the pandemic, when the world felt like it was at a standstill, I got a little down because it seemed like I'd squandered some great chances to make big strides. When I actually stopped to take inventory of what I'd been through, how my life had changed, and how I navigated this uncharted territory, I was shocked to see how far I'd come. Talk about a perspective shift!

The last thing I'll say about goals for Reflectors is just to be mindful of who you're around when you dig into this exercise. Your open centres make it easy for the excitement of others to feel like it belongs to you. Take some space away from anyone else to get you started and then share your ideas with a trusted friend or partner who can listen without influencing. And if you don't have anyone in your life right now to support you through this, you can always share your goals with me via email!
