What's Your Reflector Story?
Sep 17, 2023
Learning I'm a Reflector was a life-changing experience, and I don't say that lightly.
I sat staring at my chart for hours and barely spoke to anyone for days when I found out. There was so much I needed to process and my mind raced backwards through every event and decision in my life, like a movie playing in double time.
When I was ready to actually learn about my design, I asked myself 2 questions:
1. What does it mean?
2. What am I going to do about it?
I invite you to ask yourself those questions too when it comes to your own design.
See, everything we experience has to go through a filter in our minds so we can understand what the heck it all means. Otherwise we wouldn't know how to make sense of things.
And this is super helpful for our brains, since they love to categorize things as good or bad, but we need to be really careful about how we interpret and internalize our Human Design so it can be something that supports us and doesn't hinder our growth.
When it comes to being a Human Design type that makes up less than 1% of the population, the uniqueness can be a blessing or a curse, depending on how you see it. So, while it's fun to dig into the elements of our charts like the profile lines, strategy and authority, and all the fun gates, here are a few things to remember as you go on this journey.
Your thoughts determine your outcomes.
Have you ever bought something and then suddenly started seeing that very thing all over the place? It might've seemed like all of a sudden everyone decided to purchase it at the same time you did but really it was just your brain giving attention to something that was important to you at the time.
Our minds are great at highlighting what we decide is important and it starts to show us more of what we're thinking about. This can be amazing but if your thoughts are focusing on something like a negative belief about yourself, the mind will continue to show you more examples of it to reinforce that belief.
How does this tie in to your Human Design?
When you answer the questions I listed above, you get to choose how you'll interpret what your design means to you. For many, being a lunar being and having a slow decision making process can feel frustrating and hard to fit into the lightning speed world we live in. If you decide that being a Reflector means you're an outcast who will never be seen and heard, you're going to continue finding evidence to support that in your everyday life. And that's not going to serve you at all.
I don't want you to lie to yourself if you truly feel that being a Reflector is challenging. Instead, I'd like you to consider some ways that you can embrace the difference our type is from all the others so it can help you thrive.
Here are some examples of ways to reframe your story:
See things as an experience, not an identity: Any time you use the phrase "I am" you're solidifying into your brain a truth about who you are. Your brain will then do its best to show you examples of this, as I mentioned before. When you believe that something about yourself is etched in stone it can feel really heavy. But being a Reflector means that we're going to be a little different every day because of our open centres and connection to the Moon's cycle through all 64 gates. Just knowing that having low energy one day is a fleeting experience and not who you are, can take the pressure off and help keep things light.
Identify the tough parts and flip the script: Using phrases like, "I'm learning to take my time when I make decisions" will set the stage for you to practice using your strategy instead of fighting against it. The words you use make a huge difference in how you interpret your story, so why not try using one that make life easier? I have a 2 line in my profile (I'm a 6/2) and I used to tell people that "I am a hermit", which made it sound like I lived alone in the forest with no interaction with anyone. That started feeling like something I wanted to reframe, since I wasn't always in hermit mode. So I flipped it around to say "I'm feeling some hermit energy today" when that was true, and wow what a difference it made.
Find ways to be helpful to others: Our openness as Reflectors means we feel things really deeply and it can make it difficult to pick out which thoughts, beliefs, and emotions are actually our own. If this ever feels overwhelming, take a moment to tune into this intensity and consider who might be feeling that way. Maybe they can benefit from your support and care. This has helped me immensely because our gift of reflecting those around us is specifically intended for us to point out when things feel off so they can be corrected. The joy of fulfilling my purpose as a Reflector is a pretty amazing reward.
You're the one steering the ship.
As much as we can sometimes feel like we're the victim of our circumstances, we actually have a lot of power to change direction. But only if you actually want to. Choosing to focus on the supportive qualities in your design will allow you to see them show up more clearly in your life and you'll get to have the kind of impact you desire. Holding onto any identity or story about why you can't do something is also a choice, even when it seems like it's not.
A few years ago I heard someone say that no one can make you feel anything. The only person who can do that is ourselves. This realization hit me hard and I gave it some space to sink in.
Up until then I was happy to point out when someone's mean comment made me feel sad or pissed off. But realizing that I was the one who made the interpretation was insanely empowering. Now I was given a choice where I got to decide what things meant for me.
And you know what? Suddenly the person who cut me off in traffic wasn't a careless jerk- they were someone who was rushing to pick up their sick child from school. A comment from a friend wasn't intentionally hurtful- she was trying to share something but just picked the wrong words. I started giving others the benefit of the doubt and more importantly, I started giving myself the benefit of the doubt as well. I stopped taking myself so seriously and started using words that I'd say to the child version of me.
So, the next time you catch yourself using the phrase "I am…" pause to consider what that's putting out into the Universe and if it's serving you or not. Then it's up to you to decide what you're going to do about it!
